EMDR is an approach which seems to help ‘unblock’ the brains processing system, so traumatic memories can become less intense.
It is believed that the eye movements may help to heal the unconscious material by stimulating the brain with left-right stimulation.
Before the EMDR takes place we will have preparatory sessions. We will set up a ‘safe/calm place’ which is a relaxation technique, providing you with control and a sense of feeling safe which can be used in between sessions.
You are then asked to look at the therapists fingers following them back and forth for a short period. You are then asked to notice what comes up in your mind or any thoughts, emotions or physical sensations, holding this image in mind you then follow another set of eye movements (or hand taps)
